I have acquired skills in using a variety of techniques and
processes in order to make art in two and three dimensions. I have learnt to
analyse artworks and use them as a source of inspiration. Sculpture is the kind
of art that I find most interesting.
I intend to apply and extend the techniques and procedures I
have used to make sculpture so far in order to experiment with wire, clay and
casting. One of the ideas I explored in the earlier stages of the course was
the way in which we can use badges as a way of representing ourselves, and this
has suggested the possibility of using symbols and language.
I have identified the need to develop my written
communication skills with the help of a support worker to.
The idea that I want to explore is that of language and the
difficulty of communicating with other people. I intend to work with the human
figure to investigate this idea, because the figure offers such a range of
possibilities for working in different media and exploring different ideas.
I will look at sculptors who represent the human figure:
Giacometti, Anthony Gormley, Jaume Plensa. One of the common elements to the
work of these artists is that they seem to deal with anxiety and a sense of
alienation. Jaume Plensa actually uses
words and symbols in his sculpture.
For primary research, I will make a series of drawings form
the figure, and I will make another visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park to look
more closely at relevant work.
I will use a variety of media to make drawings from
observation and drawings to develop my ideas. This will include drawings in
three dimensions (maquettes). At the moment I am considering looking into the
possibilities of secret or hidden languages and signs by disguysing it in the
human figure, as dyslexia is a hidden disability.
At the moment we don’t know exactly what space we will have
in the final, group exhibition, and so I will make a series of pieces, but I
will be prepared to show only a selection. It is important to respect the fact
that I will show my work alongside that of other students. At this stage I am
not sure what the final pieces will look like, and so I will be prepared to
show free-standing or wall-mounted sculptures.
As far as I can see, all the materials I will need will be
easily accessible.
To evaluate my project I will
repeatedly check back on the brief to ensure that I am meeting the criteria. I
will ask my pathway tutors for feedback. I will modify my project in response
to their advice and my own observations.
